Is David Archuleta for real?

Okay you American Idol fans, David Archuleta says he is not serving a mission. “Music” can be his mission. And I want to know what you think. We were discussing this last night with some friends and the situation was compared to the Osmonds, who apparently were told music could be their mission. My question is, is David Archuleta as “big” as the Osmonds? I don’t think so, at least not yet. Is 15 minutes of possible fame worth breaking a commandment? A million things jump into my mind like, well, think of all the “Mormons” who went into the media and lost their Mormonism, can David Archuleta stand it? What about Amy Adams from Enchanted, and Aaron Elkhart, and the very attractive Paul Walker, and other LDS people who are big-ish but not BIG; hardly anyone seems to be able to hold onto their LDS standards and pursue Hollywood.

People can justify and argue until the sun goes down on people like Steve Young who didn’t serve a mission, and Larry King’s millionth wife who is LDS and does not have a temple marriage, and on and on and on. I’m not trying to judge them per say, as much as wonder if David Archuleta is that good? I don’t think so. He is good, and gets a lot of fan base here in Utah because he is from Murray, but really? Does he have what it takes to make it big? I know that people can still be wonderful people even though they have never served a mission, like everyone else I have people in my extended family who are good Mormons and have never served a mission, I’m just afraid he is going to have to lose his good-boy appeal to make it big, but maybe I’m totally off the mark. And all of my high school girls who have crushes on him and are “so proud” of him for being in the media and a “good Mormon,” and a “great role model” are going to be sorely disappointed. I'm I too much of a skeptic?

A commandment is a commandment. I don't like it when people cop out and say such and such was their mission. I think missions are harder than anything! (Even though I personally wouldn't know!)

Who's on the Lord's side, who? Now is the time to show! Rise from the dust, David Enchilada, and be a man. Unless Thomas S. gives him a personal exception, I think he needs to serve a mission. If he is to use music as a tool to spread the gospel, he will certainly be blessed with that ability once he finishes serving his full-time mission. Or, he can be like Mack Wilberg and be in a Korean pop group while he is on his mission.

David has to go on a mission. David, we belive in you. A mission must be hard, i know, but you dont want to give up a commandment for fame! we'll still love you even if you leve for two years, but we'll miss you. you can win and serve a mission!

Did you see that Newsweek article about Mormon reality TV contestants? It was very interesting.

What did it say about Mormon contestants? I am going to have to see if I can look that up!

Atleast it is a little more positive coverage than the FLDS thing right? LOL.

Last I heard he still was...so, unless something has changed. I dont think he ever said he was not.

I really think David should go on a mission. He'll receive more blessing from that than being famous. And after this life, it's not gonna matter if he was famous or not. I hope he thinks about what's going to matter further on down the road.

Maybe he should talk to the prophet about it. And I hope he'll pray about it too.

I think that he should definitely go on a mission because a mission is once in a life time thing, and music can be pursued after a mission. And since the whole world practically watches American Idol, once he goes on a mission he will be well known already and the families (on his mission) will welcome him gladly into their homes. So it's a win win situation!

YESS i think david needs to go on a mission! the lord has a plan for him. David should to give at least two years to the lord and do his work.

David will be blessed no doubt if he goes on his mission. as much as everyone will complain i know that he can give up two years of his music then come back and pursue it. And you know even if he does come back and the music thing doesnt work out then i guess thats what the lord intended for him. but i know that he needs to go on one. he will be breaking many of those mormon girls hearts who look up to him and adore him if he doesnt.

it will just show that no one can stay to the LDS standards once they're in hollywood. And so far he has been like my inspiration. The way he always says "gosh" and "dang it" makes me so proud of him and i'd hate have him slip over this.

So I know I'm commenting kind of late, but technically, young men are not actually commanded to serve missions. I was looking for a talk or anything that would say "young men are commanded to serve missions", but I couldn't find it. They are highly encouraged, and I would say it is the responsibility of young men to serve them, but I don't think they should serve them unless they are willing to fully commit to them. Uncommitted missionaries aren't always willing to do the work a mission requires. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if he decides to go on one, great, but if he feels he could use the spirit to convert people through his music, more power to him! From my understanding, he's got a good support system, so I think he'll be able to stay above the crowd and avoid "the hollywood syndrome."

I agree with this post - I think that they could find somewhere for him to serve safely for 2 years. Young men have to drop what they are doing and serve unless he gets an acception like JMadd says.

I just thought I'd pipe in and say a few things. First of all, the Osmonds were never told that music was their mission, that is mormon rumor that has floated around for years. Second-Young men are commanded to serve missions. There are hundreds of talks that state it specifically. I served a mission, not because it was a commandment, but because I wanted to. I loved every minute of it, whether it was hard or not so hard. I agree that young men need to be committed to the mission when they go on a mission, but none the less, they are commanded to go on a mission. David will be giving up one of the most important, amazing, spiritual experiences if he doesn't go on a mission. I just don't understand why anyone would give up what is most important in this life for fame. It makes me sad. He's a good kid, but once you make a decision that takes you away from the church in any way, you start down a path that leads to unhappiness.

You know it doesn't matter what everyone thinks. It is between him and the Lord. What he chooses is his decision and we should just lay off him. Is it the right decision? I don't think so but it doesn't matter what I think or you think it is David Archuleta's decision.

I love David Archuleta and have really felt the spirit in his music because he is such a good role model for the public. He should follow what he knows is right and what he has always been taught. He has said that he has always wanted to go on a mission. It will never be the wrong choice to go on a mission. NEVER! David will make the right choice. Follow the Prophet and "you" wont go a stray. Heavenly Father will bless him. Serving a mission was the best thing I ever did.
