Election Response

Although I did not vote for Barak Obama, and am not super excited at the prospect of him as our president--I teared up tonight as he won the presidency. I agree that it is huge for our country to have an African American president; and as the CNN Republican commentator said, only the worst of us would deny that this has some historic significance.

John McCain gave a very gracious speech tonight, even though he lost--I was quite impressed with that as well--although a little bit long.

It will be interesting and possibly a little scary to see a House and Senate and President all Democrat...but nevertheless I am proud of our country being ready to to vote for an African American.

Interestinly, according to all of the exit polls, it was not really a race issue, or atleast that is what they are saying--he won across the board, the young, the single women, the ethnic voters, and even a large portion of the men.

Interestinly as well, McCain didn't lose too awfully bad in the popular vote, which supports again (at least for me) my opinion that we need to get rid of the electoral college.

And, do you think gas prices have been going down during the election for political reasons? Just a thought that has crossed my mind--.

I think the horrible economic state of the world has a lot more to do with fuel prices than the US elections. When the stock market started tanking, crude oil prices started sinking. And I think Obama's acceptance speech was quite wonderful - what did you think about it? He was quite eloquent and very conciliatory.

I felt bad for McCain -- which I didn't expect, as I didn't vote for him, . . . he looked so sad.

Pres. Elect Obama's speech was really nice. I was surprised that he didn't look more excited - he was very serious, probably exhausted. But I liked that.

We're going to have a darling first family!

I too feel worried over the loss of the checks and balances that have seemed to exist more in other presidencies. The electoral college seems to not represent the people the way I wish it did. I couldn't watch Obama's speech. I should have, but didn't.

I'm not happy about the results... I personally feel like Obama is about as close to being a communist as anyone can get, but I will follow the 12th Article of Faith.

I went to bed before Obama came on, I will have to see a re-broadcast or internet cast, but I heard it was really moving. I worry about checks and balances as well, and I agree about the oil being about the economy, but the sudden drop in prices the week of the elections has been really nice! ANd yes, a darling first family, but yes...closer to socialism....here we come.

Definitely agree with the socialism comment. That's my biggest concern right now. I'm hoping he can prove me wrong, though.

Although I don't agree with the Hitler part of this particular you tube clip, I think it's a very interesting clip if you haven't seen it yet:

I don't want to come across as inflammatory, but what is everyone's definition of 'socialism' and why they think our nation is headed that way? I am curious, as I find the current state of our 'capitalist' nation completely unsatisfactory. And the current economic situation has proven that when the big guys who vociferously call for non-regulation under the guise of 'capitalism' screw up big, they look for government assistance. Even when they should have changed their ways after doing the same thing 20-30 years ago (see the Savings&Loan crises of the 80s and the car company bailouts of the 70s and 80s). So I would like to know where other people are coming from and what they see as solutions to the problems we are facing. Honestly, I'm surrounded by people who think a lot like me (western Washington is quite liberal and pro-Obama) and I haven't really heard what the average conservative citizen is saying on the subject.

I can only speak for myself Scully, but I think its the move towards government taking care of peoples' bad choices with mortgages and sticking their fingers all over business like the auto industry and banks ect., as well as the move towards socialized medicine with his healthcare ideas....as well as his tax the rich to help the poor equalizing type ideas. Although, I admit I am not the most knowledable person on this front so you could probably tell me otherwise. :D
